Empowering Women in Nagaland

May 08, 2025 | Farooq Wani

One such admirable initiative by the Assam Rifles is the Women’s Skill Development Centre in Ato, situated in the newly formed Niuland district of Nagaland. This region had long suffered from inadequate infrastructure and limited opportunities for women. The center, established by Assam Rifles, has become a beacon of hope for around 200 women and girls in the area. Located in a multipurpose hall in Nihokhu village, it is equipped with handloom weaving machines and motorized sewing machines.
The primary goal of this project is to provide women with valuable skills in traditional dressmaking, sewing, and weaving. This initiative not only empowers women to become self-sufficient but also helps preserve traditional crafts, ensuring they are passed down to future generations.
Another impactful project is the fruit-based canning plant in Medziphema, developed under the guidance of Assam Rifles. This project provides employment opportunities to local women and supports 30–40 farmer families striving for economic independence. By capitalizing on the region’s abundant pineapple resources, the plant produces approximately 235 cans of sliced pineapples daily. Operated by a cooperative society consisting of Assam Rifles personnel and the village council, this initiative has proven transformative—creating jobs for both women and youth, and fostering the region’s social and economic growth. It has also strengthened the bond between the Assam Rifles and the local community.
The fruit-based canning plant also stands as a model for sustainable development. By utilizing the region’s natural resources and empowering local women, this project is creating ripples of positive change. Its economic benefits extend beyond direct participants, fostering a sense of pride and unity within the community. It exemplifies what can be achieved when communities work together to address local challenges.
The importance of these initiatives cannot be understated. They serve as powerful reminders of the untapped potential within every woman, waiting to be released. The women involved are not only acquiring skills but also gaining confidence, independence, and a renewed sense of purpose. They are becoming role models within their communities, encouraging others to follow their example.
Additionally, these projects are crucial in preserving the rich cultural heritage of Nagaland. Traditional crafts like dressmaking, sewing, and weaving are not just skills—they are integral to the community’s identity. By ensuring these crafts endure through future generations, the Assam Rifles are playing a vital role in safeguarding the region’s cultural legacy.
Empowering women is not just about providing them with skills and opportunities. It is about challenging and dismantling deeply ingrained societal norms that sustain gender discrimination. It means creating an environment where women are valued, respected, and given the space to flourish. The Assam Rifles, through these initiatives, are making a significant contribution to this broader mission.
In conclusion, the journey toward gender equality is long and challenging, but every step taken in the right direction brings us closer to a more just and equitable society. The initiatives spearheaded by the Assam Rifles are shining examples of what can be accomplished through dedication, empathy, and a strong commitment to empowering the marginalized. Empowering women is not just a moral obligation—it is essential for the holistic development of our society. As we continue to strive for a world where women are respected and valued, let us remember: every effort counts, and every voice matters.
