Honouring Republic Day

January 25, 2026 | Darakshan Hassan Bhat

Republic Day marks the day of real independence. India gained independence from British rule to secure rights and safeguards for its people. There are many nations that achieved independence but did not succeed in sustaining democratic values. Several neighbouring countries serve as reminders that independence without a strong constitutional framework can easily descend into authoritarianism. Despite having constitutions, repeated violations, military interventions, and the denial of civil liberties have weakened democratic institutions in those countries. This contrast highlights a crucial reality: independence liberates a nation, but a republic safeguards that freedom through law, accountability, and democratic governance.
Every year India is celebrating the birth of republic day, the implementation of the constitution that allows India to make a proud in being the world’s largest democracy. This day is to revisit the past, recall and remember the events and the people that led to those events and successes. It’s always a pride and a proud thing to do, for it satisfy the collective identity and defines the way we look upon ourselves as a nation. With the onset of the New Year 2023 and the challenges ahead our country is fighting with, is a matter of pride. India being the second most populated country, feeding well on all fronts is a challenging task. Our political leaders, social scientists’ economic experts and scientific leaders take a lead and pull up us together for the development in every sector of life.
During the last two years, Kashmir witnessed huge participation in the celebration of National Days. Celebration of victory is always a pride and a proud thing to do, for it satisfy the collective identity and defines the way we look upon ourselves as a nation.
January 26 and August 15 are not merely dates but pillars of India’s national conscience. They are reminders of immense sacrifice, struggle, and bloodshed endured by thousands who envisioned a free and just nation. Independence Day marks liberation from colonial rule, while Republic Day celebrates the adoption of a Constitution that transformed freedom into a living, enforceable system of rights and duties. India’s stature as the world’s largest democracy is rooted not only in its independence but in the constitutional vision that followed.
The celebration of national days in Kashmir is not a recent phenomenon. However, from 1990 until the abrogation of Article 370, these occasions were overshadowed by violence and unrest. An entire generation grew up without witnessing Republic Day or Independence Day celebrations in their true spirit. The youth who came of age during this period experienced disruption, shutdowns, and ideological manipulation rather than civic participation and democratic engagement.
The generation that grew up between 1990 and 2016 was largely deprived of exposure to constitutional values. Instead of seeing the national flag as a symbol of belonging, many encountered it through the prism of conflict. This absence of democratic experience left lasting social and psychological impacts, disconnecting youth from institutions meant to protect them. In recent years, particularly after the restoration of peace and the decline of violence, Kashmir has witnessed a visible transformation. Youth under the age of 25 have grown up in a comparatively stable environment, one that offers space for education, employment, and civic participation. Opportunities that were once unimaginable are now accessible, enabling young people to channel their energy towards constructive nation-building efforts.
Today, the youth of Kashmir are not passive observers but active contributors to national sovereignty and integrity. They are entering public service, entrepreneurship, education, and even the security forces, proving their commitment to the nation. The last decade, especially after the abrogation of Article 370, has brought about a profound shift among young people who were once deeply affected by violence and instability.
The republican character of India is often most visible in Kashmir. Even during periods of unrest, security forces have largely exercised restraint, prioritising the protection of civilians. Beyond maintaining law and order, they have engaged in counselling and outreach to prevent youth from falling into cycles of violence and radicalisation. This approach reflects the spirit of the Constitution, where authority is balanced by accountability and power by responsibility.
Today, national festivals are celebrated across Kashmir with growing enthusiasm. The Indian flag is no longer viewed as distant or imposed but embraced with pride and dignity. Youth proudly display the Tricolour, share patriotic messages, and actively participate in Republic Day celebrations. What once seemed improbable has become a lived reality, as peace and prosperity gradually replace fear and alienation.
Republic Day is not merely a holiday but a day of remembrance. It honours those who sacrificed their lives and liberties so that future generations could live under the protection of law. Celebrating Republic Day is not about ceremonial displays alone; it is about internalising constitutional values and passing them on to the next generation.
Among the many steps taken to restore peace in Kashmir, the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A stands out as a turning point. It removed long-standing ambiguities, corrected political distortions, and reinforced the principle of equal citizenship. This move strengthened India nationally and enhanced its standing globally, while helping people in Kashmir better understand the intent of the Indian republic.
Independence is not simply the absence of colonial rule; it is the presence of rights, dignity, and security. When basic rights are compromised after independence, freedom loses its meaning. The experiences of neighbouring countries underscore this reality. A republic, therefore, is freedom sustained through law. It ensures that life, liberty, and dignity are protected irrespective of caste, colour, or creed.
Republic Day reminds us that democracy must be lived, protected, and renewed continuously. The Constitution may not be perfect, no human creation is, but it remains a living promise. As long as its values guide our conscience and conduct, India’s republic will endure, uniting its people through the rule of law, democratic faith, and shared responsibility.
