Srinagar, July 22: In a major step towards strengthening student participation in university governance, the University of Kashmir on Tuesday convened the first meeting of the Kashmir University Students' Council (Class Representatives) for the Academic Session 2026 at Gandhi Bhawan.
Organised by the Department of Students' Welfare (DSW), the meeting brought together more than 200 Class Representatives from the University's teaching departments and satellite campuses, providing a common platform to engage directly with the University leadership on issues related to student welfare, academics, infrastructure and campus development.
The meeting was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan and attended by Dean Academic Affairs Prof. Pirzada Shariefuddin, Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal, Dean Students' Welfare Prof. Seema Singh, Controller of Examinations Prof. Majid Zaman Baba, senior faculty members and university officials.
Addressing the representatives, Prof. Nilofer Khan described them as key partners in the University's growth and urged them to uphold the values of integrity, inclusiveness, empathy, discipline and accountability while representing the student community. She encouraged them to become ambassadors of positive change by promoting academic excellence, harmony, innovation and constructive dialogue across the campus.
Reaffirming the University's commitment to a student-centric administration, the Vice-Chancellor assured the representatives that their feedback and suggestions would continue to guide institutional development.
During an interactive session, the Class Representatives raised issues concerning academic facilities, hostels, digital services, infrastructure, sports, cultural activities and student support services. The University administration appreciated the constructive feedback and assured that genuine concerns would be addressed.
Dean Students' Welfare Prof. Seema Singh said the Department remains committed to creating opportunities that help students develop leadership, creativity, innovation and social responsibility beyond the classroom. She urged the representatives to strengthen communication between students and the administration while encouraging wider participation in academic, cultural and community activities.
Dean Academic Affairs Prof. Pirzada Shariefuddin stressed that academic excellence goes hand in hand with co-curricular and extracurricular engagement. He called upon the representatives to inspire greater student participation while promoting discipline and academic integrity.
Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal highlighted the importance of effective communication, mutual trust and collaboration in strengthening the University's academic and administrative ecosystem. Controller of Examinations Prof. Majid Zaman Baba also urged the representatives to ensure timely dissemination of academic and examination-related information among students.
The programme concluded with the screening of a documentary produced by the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC), showcasing the Department of Students' Welfare's initiatives in student welfare, scholarships, youth leadership, transport facilities for female students, support for students with disabilities and the University's achievements at national youth festivals, literary events and the National Youth Parliament Competition.
