Srinagar, Aug 12: The Allama Iqbal Library (AIL), University of Kashmir (KU), organised a one-day capacity-building programme for Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals on the theme “Smart Libraries, Skilled Librarians, and Smiling Users” at the University’s Main Campus on the eve of National Librarians’ Day.
The programme aimed to familiarise library professionals with emerging practices in library and information services, with emphasis on technology-enabled libraries, changing user expectations, digital resources and professional skills required for contemporary library management. It also provided a platform for LIS professionals, students and scholars to discuss developments shaping the future of library services.
Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, in her address at the inaugural session, said that libraries are evolving alongside changes in technology and user behaviour, requiring professionals to continuously update their skills.
“A modern library is shaped not only by its resources and technology but also by the skills of the professionals who connect users with knowledge. Continuous learning is therefore essential for librarians to respond to changing information needs,” she said.
Dean Academic Affairs KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, said that technological developments have changed the way information is accessed, organised and shared, making professional training an important part of contemporary library services.
Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, said that libraries remain an important part of the University's academic environment and that their services must continue to evolve in response to the needs of students, researchers and faculty.
Earlier, Librarian, AIL, KU, Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Lone, in his welcome address, outlined the objectives of the programme and said that the changing information environment requires LIS professionals to develop new competencies in digital services, information management and user engagement.
The programme featured expert sessions and interactive discussions on smart library technologies, digital information services, emerging LIS practices, user-centric library services and professional skill development.
The programme was attended by library professionals, students and scholars of Library and Information Sciences.
