February 14, 2019, is marked in the history of India as one of the darkest days. On this day, a convoy of Indian paramilitary personnel was attacked in Pulwama, a Southern District of Jammu and Kashmir in which 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnels lost their lives. This suicide bombing left the nation in mourning. The attack was carried out by a terrorist affiliated with the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) which shook the entire country hence reigniting the debates on national security and counter-terrorism strategies. The Pulwama attack was not just a strike on the security forces but an assault on the values of peace, harmony. It was a heinous crime against the humanity. Terrorism in any form and shape is a war against humanity and an unforgivable crime and Pulwama attack is one of the biggest examples how extremist ideologies from time to time have distorted the essence of human values and peace.

The attack was in no way an act of bravery that can be celebrated or valorised but a cowardice and a cowardly crime that targeted peace and security of the nation. The innocent soldiers who are committed and dedicated to serve the nation lost their lives in this act of cowardice. In the whole unfortunate incident, the most concerning issue is how the suicide bombing- that was the nature of attack in this case reflects the radicalization and exploitation of youth by terror outfits in the valley. The concern is not for India only but raises a question of security threat at the International levels too.
In one’s analysis we find such attacks being justified and backed by the ideology of Jihad, that has been instilled in the minds and hearts of people but the reality is Islam rejects Violence and Suicide. It has become a critically most debated aspect globally, how Islam is misinterpreted and used by the radicals to destabilize the peace of the world. Islam is a religion of peace that strictly prohibits suicide and killing of innocent people. The Quran states: "Whoever kills a person [unjustly] … it is as though he has killed all of humanity" (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:32). Furthermore, suicide is considered a grave sin in Islam. The religion encourages peace, tolerance, and coexistence, and there is no justification for any act of terror in its name.
Despite the clear prohibitions, the extremist organizations continue to manipulate young minds and use them as proxies and tools in their vicious agendas. It is crucial to differentiate between faith and radicalized ideology, ensuring that no religion is wrongly blamed for acts of terrorism carried out by a misguided few.
In the aftermath of the Pulwama attack, the whole nation united in the mourning and resilience. India displayed remarkable resilience and unity, stood together honouring the sacrifices of the fallen soldiers. Candlelight marches, tributes, and memorials were held across the country, reflecting the collective grief and anger of the people. The government took firm steps in response, launching diplomatic offensives and military actions to combat terrorism. One of the most significant responses came in the form of the Balakot airstrike on February 26, 2019, where the Indian Air Force targeted terrorist camps inside Pakistan. This decisive action sent a strong message to Pakistan and the world that India would not tolerate acts of terror on its soil. Kashmir underwent drastic changes post-Pulwama, with increased security measures, political restructuring and economic shifts. Funerals of slain terrorists, before 2020 were made as large scale events where thousands of people used to gather often leading to anti-India protests and fresh recruitments. But in April 2020, a drastic decision was taken by the government not to handover terrorists bodies to families. Instead, they were buried to the remote locations, usually in the North Kashmir with only few family members allowed. This strategic move not only got hold on terrorism and new recruitments in Kashmir but prevented the public glorification of the terrorists acts and the emotional influence of the funerals in radicalized youth. Along with this operation All-Out was intensified targeting both local and Pakistan sponsored terrorists. Many top commanders including Riyaz Naikoo and Zakir Musa were neutralized with real-time intelligence and better coordination between the Army, CRPF and J&K police that made operations precise.
The incident in Pulwama serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat that terrorism poses on a global scale. Even though India has made great strides to fortify its security forces, combating terrorism calls for an international commitment. To destroy terror networks, stop radicalization, and stop providing financial and logistical support to extremist organizations, nations must cooperate together. To prevent such tragedies, strict measures against individuals harboring terrorists, intelligence sharing, and international cooperation are crucial. There is no faith, no rationale, and no place for terrorism in a civilized society. It is a threat that needs to be eliminated via teamwork. The courageous troops and martyrs of Pulwama gave their lives while performing their duties; it is now our job to make sure that their sacrifice was not in vain. As a country, we need to work on bolstering our national security, encouraging our security forces, helping their families, and creating a culture that protects young people from extremist propaganda. In order to prevent radicalization and make sure that no one is duped by the false claims made by terrorist organizations, education, awareness, and constructive involvement can be extremely important. In addition to being a day for grief, Pulwama Day ought to be a day for introspection and action. In addition to honouring the fallen heroes, we must make a commitment to create a society free from violence and prejudice.
A Call for Peace and Justice
February 14 will always be associated with tragedy, courage, and the unwavering resolve of a country that will not submit to fear. The Pulwama incident was a horrible crime against humanity and a disgraceful act of terrorism. It emphasized the necessity of strict anti-terror policies, international collaboration, and a firm opposition to the extremist ideas. Pulwama Day is primarily a reminder that terrorists can never prevail over the will of a unified and resolute populace. India and its people are steadfast in their will to defend their countrymen, pay tribute to their martyrs, and combat terrorism in all of its manifestations. Let us remember, pay tribute, and make a commitment to strive for a time when humanity will triumph over hatred and peace will triumph over violence.
