Police on Wednesday said three militants including a TRF commander were killed in a brief encounter with security forces in Rambagh area of Srinagar.
Police said the shootout took place after security forces along with Jammu and Kashmir police were on a search and cordon operation after receiving intelligence about movement of militants from the area.
The IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar identified one of the three slain militants as Mehran, a top TRF (The Resistance Front) commander.
Hailing from Srinagar, Mehran was involved in the killing of two teachers & other civilians in the city, police said.
The encounter took place after November 15 controversial encounter in Hyderpora area of Srinagar in which four persons were killed. The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident after families of three persons killed in the encounter alleged that their wards were killed in staged encounter and were connected with militancy.
