Wani also drew attention to Kashmir’s rich Sufi heritage, particularly the teachings of Sheikh-ul-Alam (RA), whose spiritual and moral philosophy continues to inspire generations. He highlighted the contribution of women disciples in Kashmir’s Sufi tradition, stressing that women have historically played important roles in spiritual learning, moral guidance and the transmission of cultural values. Their contribution, he said, offers a powerful reminder that women’s participation in society has deep roots in Kashmir’s civilisational heritage.

Government Degree College Kupwara organised a thought-provoking guest lecture on Tuesday , focusing on emerging opportunities in print, electronic and digital media, women’s empowerment, youth development and the growing social challenges confronting Kashmir.
The lecture was delivered by Farooq Ahmad Wani, Editor-in-Chief of Brighter Kashmir, who drew upon his journalistic experience to acquaint students with the changing media landscape and the expanding career opportunities available to young people.
Wani emphasised that journalism is no longer confined to newspapers and television, as digital platforms have opened new avenues for creative expression, professional growth and public engagement. He encouraged students to develop communication skills, critical thinking and digital literacy while upholding accuracy, credibility and ethical responsibility.
Women’s empowerment emerged as a key theme of the discourse. Wani stressed that educating women, expanding employment opportunities and enabling them to achieve financial independence are essential for building an equitable and progressive society. He urged young women to recognise their potential, pursue professional ambitions and take advantage of opportunities available in education, entrepreneurship, journalism and other sectors.
Referring to Islamic teachings, he highlighted the importance of dignity, justice and respect for women in the Quran and Hadith. He also invoked the principles articulated by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in his Farewell Sermon, underscoring the need to uphold human dignity and fulfil the rights of women. He observed that genuine empowerment must translate into respect, equal opportunities and meaningful participation in social and economic life.
The speaker further encouraged students to explore government schemes designed to support women through skill development, self-employment, entrepreneurship and financial assistance. He urged young women to seek information from the relevant departments, verify eligibility requirements and make effective use of available opportunities to become economically self-reliant.
Addressing the Valley’s pressing social concerns, Wani expressed concern over radicalisation, drug abuse and other social evils affecting young people. He called for a coordinated response involving families, educational institutions, civil society and the media to protect youth from harmful influences. Education, awareness, constructive engagement and strong moral values, he stressed, remain vital to building a healthier society.
He also underscored the responsibility of educational institutions to prepare students not merely for employment but for responsible citizenship. Encouraging greater interaction between students and professionals, he said such engagements can broaden horizons, inspire ambition and help young people make informed choices about their future.
The lecture was marked by an engaging exchange of ideas, with Wani addressing students’ queries through clear explanations and practical insights. His command over the subject, effective communication and ability to connect with the audience added depth to the discussion.
Around 100 undergraduate students, predominantly girls, attended the programme along with faculty members. The session received an encouraging response and was appreciated by the college administration and attending dignitaries for its relevance, clarity and social significance.
The proceedings were expertly moderated by Major Muneer, whose impressive communication skills, confident handling of the programme and seamless coordination ensured a smooth and engaging session. His professional moderation added to the overall quality of the event.
He expressed his sincere appreciation to the college administration for its valuable support and cooperation, stating that the programme’s success would not have been possible without their dedicated efforts and encouragement. He lauded their commitment to providing students with meaningful learning opportunities, which contributed significantly to making the event a grand success.
The programme reinforced the importance of connecting academic institutions with experienced professionals to expand career awareness, promote women’s economic independence and encourage young people to confront social challenges with knowledge, confidence and responsibility.
