Srinagar, Feb 13: The Jammu and Kashmir Government informed the Legislative Assembly that the Achan garbage dumping site is being managed through scientific interventions rather than abrupt closure.
Responding to a question by MLA Shamim Firdous, the Housing and Urban Development Department said the site has accumulated decades of legacy waste and serves as Srinagar’s primary municipal solid waste facility. Immediate closure is not feasible without an alternative facility.
The Srinagar Municipal Corporation has implemented measures under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, including bio-mining and bio-remediation of approximately 11 lakh metric tonnes of waste, operation of a leachate treatment plant, odour control, environmental monitoring, and creation of a green buffer zone. The phased closure plan under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 and CITIIS 2.0 will transition the site to engineered sanitary landfill practices while considering public representations.
