Srinagar, Aug 28: While speaking to inhabitants living around Achan–Eidgah, Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi expressed serious concern over the continuing waste-management crisis at the Achan landfill, saying the people living in its vicinity are bearing the consequences of prolonged accumulation of waste.

Inam Un Nabi said the latest developments before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) are deeply concerning, with around 11 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste still reported at Achan, while only approximately 40,000 tonnes has so far been processed through bio-mining. The deadline for clearing the legacy waste has also reportedly been extended from March 2027 to March 2028.
He said the problem cannot be addressed merely by extending deadlines, particularly when Srinagar generates around 520–550 tonnes of municipal waste every day, against an existing processing capacity of approximately 150 tonnes per day.
“Not only the The people of Achan Eidgah but entire old City ( Shahr e Khass) have lived with this burden for years. They deserve a clean and healthy environment, not an ever-expanding waste site at their doorstep.” Inam Un Nabi said.
Welcoming the reported approval of the ₹361-crore, 800 TPD Integrated Solid Waste Management Project, he stressed that its implementation must be transparent, time-bound and scientifically monitored. He also called for immediate measures to strengthen waste segregation, recycling and processing, alongside regular independent monitoring of leachate, groundwater and nearby water bodies.
Inam Un Nabi said Achan must be scientifically remediated and ultimately reclaimed, with the government ensuring that the burden is not simply shifted elsewhere.
“This is not only about garbage; it is about the dignity, health and environment of the people living around Achan and Eidgah. The government must act now, with accountability and a definite timeline.” he said.
