Act Responsibly

March 25, 2020 |

At a time when the world is struggling to contain the coronavirus epidemic, the role of citizens is equally important in defeating this disease which is setting new records with every passing day. While Kashmir was spared the horror of COVID-19 in the initial days of the outbreak, the first case of an elderly woman, who allegedly used the clout of her family to evade the mandatory screening at the Srinagar airport, brought the horror at our doorsteps. Now, two more cases have been detected in Kashmir. Both of them are from Srinagar; one is from Natipora who was travelling in the same flight which was boarded by the first confirmed case of Kashmir and the second hails from Hyderpora who had apparently attended a congregation of Tablighi Jamaat in New Delhi. While the second case is reported to have not got in touch with many people, the third man has mingled with fellow worshippers in New Delhi and later in Srinagar as well. According to reports, the third case has also visited a number of hospitals when he started to develop symptoms. However, due to the inefficient system and lack of awareness, he was treated normally till his condition started to worsen and he reported at Chest Disease hospital where it was confirmed that he has been infected by novel coronavirus. From the initial few dozens of suspected cases in Jammu and Kashmir, the number has crossed 4000 even as many more are being tested and hospitalised or put under home quarantine. While it is natural for people to panic, given that the numbers are on an upward curve, we must act responsibly. The government has set into motion a comprehensive process to detect the suspected cases who are being accordingly treated as per the protocol. However, there are reports that the influential and the connected are managing to evade the essential screening at the Srinagar airport. Indeed, the first confirmed case entered Kashmir through official negligence, if not outright official complicity. This reckless behaviour has put the entire Valley at risk. In many localities, people are complaining of neighbours returning from other parts of country or abroad and freely moving around without any sense of duty towards not just their immediate family members and neighbours but the whole society. If immediate corrective measures are not taken, we are in for a big mess which has the potential to kill thousands of people. By acting responsibly, we can defeat the COVID-19.
