Act With Passion

January 18, 2023 |

Nearly three months after terrorists struck in south Kashmir’s Shopian district and killed a Kashmiri Pandit, Puran Krishan Bhat, just when he was about to enter his home in the village, the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has handed an appointment letter for a government job to his widow. According to reports, Krishen had fled Kashmir in 2021 during a wave of target killing of minority community in which M L Bindroo, a prominent Srinagar-based physician among two more Hindus and a Sikh lady, were gunned down by terrorists. Krishen had returned to the Shopian village during autumn to harvest his apple orchard when the tragedy struck. He was among at least five Kashmiri Pandits who were gunned down by terrorists affiliated with The Resistance Front, an offshoot of the proscribed Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit which is based in Pakistan. The killing had triggered a fresh cycle of fear and abandonments with even Kashmiri Pandit employees leaving their jobs and fleeing to Jammu as the terrorists threatened to up the ante, describing the minority community as a tool of implementing the so-called demographic change in Jammu and Kashmir by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. However, the government was now cowed into the threats of the terrorists and the anti-terror campaign was only intensified, resulting in the elimination or arrest of nearly all the terrorists who were involved in these target killings. While the killings have come to a halt, some Kashmiri Pandits continue to live in fear. Earlier, some of them had become an integral part of Kashmiri society by participating in Muslim weddings and attending Muslim festivals. Even Muslims used to attend their weddings and festivals, and played leading roles at the time of deaths of Kashmiri Hindus. However, the horror unleashed by The Resistance Front has created a wedge between the two communities which will take some time to bridge. The trust that was built between the two communities over the last two decades has suddenly ceased to exist given the vicious turn that the events took in 2021 and 2022. The administration has an important role to play in bringing the two communities together. It needs to apply quick balm on the wounds of the members of the minority community which have suffered in the recent past. In this regard, the appointment of Krishen’s wife in the government is a welcome step. But much more needs to be done so that the minority community can feel a sense of relief as well as security in a divided Kashmir.
