New Delhi/Srinagar, June 30: Afcons Infrastructure has secured an arbitration award of ₹149 crore in connection with a tunnel construction project in Jammu and Kashmir, providing financial relief in a long-standing contractual dispute.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the dispute arose from claims related to cost escalations, execution delays, and contractual obligations in a strategically significant tunnel project executed in difficult Himalayan terrain. The arbitration proceedings examined claims made by the company regarding additional costs incurred due to site conditions, design changes and project execution challenges.
The arbitral tribunal, after reviewing submissions from both sides along with contractual records and project documentation, ruled in favour of Afcons Infrastructure, awarding the company ₹149 crore along with applicable interest as per arbitration terms.
The award is expected to improve the company’s cash flow position and strengthen its balance sheet, particularly at a time when infrastructure firms continue to face cost pressures and execution risks in mountainous and high-altitude projects.
Afcons Infrastructure, part of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, has been involved in several major infrastructure assignments across India, including roads, bridges, metro systems and tunnelling projects, many of which involve complex geological and logistical challenges.
Industry observers said arbitration awards of this nature reflect the growing reliance on dispute resolution mechanisms in large infrastructure contracts, especially in projects executed in sensitive and difficult terrains such as Jammu and Kashmir.
The award marks another instance of contractual dispute resolution in the infrastructure sector, where delays and cost overruns have often led to prolonged legal and arbitration proceedings between contractors and executing agencies.
