Almond blossoms herald spring’s arrival in Kashmir

March 27, 2025 | BK News Service

With the arrival of spring, it has become a common thing to talk or hear about Japan’s cherry blossoms—or sakura. This grand natural event draws millions of visitors from all over the world, just to witness their fleeting pink splendor. Nestled in the northern reaches of India, Kashmir’s almond blossoms are quietly emerging as a rival spectacle, captivating hearts with their delicate beauty. While Japan’s cherry blossoms have long held a monopoly on floral fame, the almond blossoms of Kashmir offer an equally mesmerizing experience.
Every March-April, almond trees burst into bloom in Kashmir Valley, painting the landscape with soft shades of pink and white. The Badamwari Garden in Srinagar, locally known as Badam Vaer, becomes the epicenter of this floral show. Located at the foothills of the historic Hari Parbat Fort, come springtime, this garden transforms into a sea of blossoms.
The almond trees, among the first to flower in the region, typically bloom from mid-March to mid-April. The blooms mark the arrival of spring. Their multicolored petals—ranging from pale blush to vivid pink—stand out against the backdrop of snow-capped Himalayan peaks, creating a striking contrast that photographers and nature lovers find irresistible.
What sets Kashmir’s almond blossoms apart from Japan’s cherry blossoms?
Badamwari, believed by some historians, dates back to the 15th century under Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin’s reign. It was once a royal retreat famed for its orchards. Now revived as a public garden after years of neglect, it stands as a testament to Kashmir’s heritage.
The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department organises the annual Almond Blossom Festival to celebrate spring’s arrival. The festival is not only the best time to enjoy the blooms, but it also weaves together music, local cuisine, and traditional crafts, offering visitors a holistic experience that goes beyond mere sightseeing.
Kashmir’s almond blossoms don’t just compete with cherry blossoms aesthetically—they also offer a unique logistical allure. Japan’s sakura season is notoriously crowded, with peak bloom dates drawing hordes of tourists and skyrocketing costs for travel and accommodation. Kashmir, on the other hand, remains relatively undiscovered by the global masses, providing a more affordable and serene alternative. The Badamwari Garden, along with other almond-laden spots like Pulwama, sees a surge in local and domestic visitors, but the experience retains an unspoiled charm.
