Union Home Minister Amit Shah will hold back-to-back rallies in Jammu and Kashmir when he arrives here on October 1.
According to reports, the Home Minister is scheduled to arrive in Jammu and Kashmir for a two-day visit on October 1 and 2 and hold two mammoth public rallies at Rajouri and Kupwara. Another rally was planned in Doda but it won’t be held due to paucity of time.
The schedule of the Home Minister’s visit has been conveyed to Jammu and Kashmir administration and senior BJP leaders.
Shah will arrive in Jammu on October 1 where he will be received by the party leaders following which he will travel to Rajouri. A public meeting is planned to be held in the district which will mark the beginning of the party’s election campaign for assembly polls in the union territory.
Speculation are rife that the Centre may grant Scheduled Tribe status to the Pahari community and the Home Minister could make an announcement in this regard.
Paharis have a significant population in Rajouri and Poonch and the party is attempting to turn the tide in the twin districts in its favour by granting them ST status.
The HM’s visit come days after a Gujjar leader of the BJP, Ghulam Ali Khatana, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, taking many in Jammu and Kashmir by surprise.
The saffron party is planning to rally the voters in Poonch and Rajouri districts ahead of assembly elections as it may help the party in swinging the Pahari voters in its favour.
The twin districts have been affected by terrorist activities in recent past and a prominent face of the party was recently arrested by the J&K Police for his involvement in terror activities.
The Home Minister will also meet the party leaders and office bearers where the issue of the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to be discussed along with the party’s preparations.
On the next day, Shah will travel to north Kashmir where he will address a public rally at Kupwara for which the party’s preparations are in full swing.
Sources said the Home Minister will review security situation in Jammu and Kashmir in a high level meeting which will be attended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, DGP Dilbag Singh and senior officers of the security agencies.
The Home Minister will return to New Delhi in the evening of October 2.
The assembly elections are due in Jammu and Kashmir with the Special Summary Revision ordered by the Election Commission of India underway and the process will be completed by November 25.
With the winter approaching, the elections are likely to be held next year if all goes well.
The Union Home Ministry also has to take call on number of nomination seats for Kashmiri migrants and Pakistan occupied Jammu Kashmir (PoJK) refugees in the Legislative Assembly as suggested in the Delimitation Commission report.
