Imphal, Feb 4: In observance of World Wetlands Day, Assam Rifles carried out community-driven environmental initiatives at Komlakhong (Imphal West) and Moreh (Tengnoupal District), emphasizing the critical role of wetlands in maintaining ecological balance and supporting human wellbeing.
At Komlakhong, in collaboration with the Forest Department and local residents, Assam Rifles organized a plantation drive, planting 200 saplings including sal, teak, and bamboo along wetland fringes. The initiative aims to enhance biodiversity, prevent soil erosion, and improve the ecological health of the wetland areas, which serve as vital habitats for flora and fauna.
Simultaneously, at S Moljol Primary School in Moreh, Assam Rifles conducted an environmental awareness quiz for students, engaging young minds in understanding the importance of wetlands and fostering a sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation. Students participated enthusiastically, demonstrating knowledge about the role of wetlands in water purification, flood control, and sustaining biodiversity.
These initiatives reflect Assam Rifles’ commitment to community engagement, environmental protection, and sustainable development, promoting awareness about natural resources while actively contributing to local ecological restoration.
By combining hands-on conservation activities with educational outreach, the event highlighted that protecting wetlands is not just an environmental necessity but also a community responsibility that ensures long-term ecological and societal benefits.
