In a significant blow to cross-border narcotics trafficking, Assam Rifles seized a massive consignment of Heroin No. 4 and Methamphetamine tablets worth ₹40.05 crores during a meticulously planned operation near Melbuk, Zokhawthar in Mizoram on July 26, 2025.
The operation, launched based on specific intelligence inputs, led to the recovery of 1.041 kg of high-grade Heroin No. 4 and 9.381 kg of Methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as "Yaba," a potent and addictive synthetic drug increasingly smuggled from the Myanmar border region.
Assam Rifles, often referred to as the "Sentinels of the Northeast", conducted the anti-narcotics operation under its ongoing drive to curb the rising tide of drug trafficking across India’s porous international borders. The seized contraband was handed over to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for further investigation and destruction as per legal procedures.
A senior official from the Assam Rifles stated, “This seizure is part of our continued effort to combat the menace of drugs that is not only destroying lives but also funding insurgent and anti-national activities in the region.” He added that vigilant border patrolling and strong intelligence-sharing with other agencies have significantly helped intercept illegal narcotics in transit.
Mizoram’s proximity to the infamous Golden Triangle — the area where the borders of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand meet — makes it a key route for drug smuggling into India. The latest seizure adds to the growing list of successful interdictions by Assam Rifles in recent months.
Officials believe that the consignment was likely smuggled in from Myanmar and was destined for distribution across other Indian states, where synthetic drugs have seen a spike in demand.
The force reaffirmed its commitment to a drug-free Northeast, urging local communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
This operation is part of Assam Rifles' larger mission to dismantle narcotics networks, protect youth from substance abuse, and ensure national security in the border states.
