Srinagar, Jan 15 : The Nation today proudly commemorated Indian Army Day, marking the historic moment when General (later Field Marshal) K. M. Cariappa, OBE, assumed office as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army on

15 January 1949. This momentous occasion stands as a tribute to the valour, sacrifice, discipline and unflinching professionalism of the men and women of the Indian Army, who remain steadfast in safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nation.
Army Day serves as a solemn reminder of Indian Army’s enduring legacy and its unwavering commitment to the Nation under the revered motto, “Service Before Self”. From the icy peaks of the great Himalayas to the unforgiving deserts, dense jungles and challenging frontiers, the Indian Army continues to stand as the Nation’s shield, exemplifying courage, resilience and selfless service in the face of adversity.
Army Day celebrations were held at Srinagar, Sharifabad, Uri and Tangdhar. Wreath laying ceremonies were attended by senior Military Officials. Ex-servicemen (ESMs) were also felicitated in recognition of their invaluable contribution and lifelong service to the Nation. These events underscore Indian Army’s rich traditions and highlight the enduring bond between serving soldiers, veterans and the citizens they protect.
