Agartala/Guwahati, July 3: In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking in the Northeast, the Assam Rifles, under the Spear Corps, conducted two separate intelligence-based joint operations with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Agartala, and Cachar Police, seizing a huge quantity of codeine-based cough syrup valued at over ₹1.34 crore and apprehending two alleged smugglers.
The first operation was carried out at Agartala Railway Station in Tripura, where Assam Rifles and DRI officials intercepted a consignment containing 55,626 bottles of illegal codeine-based cough syrup. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth approximately ₹1.27 crore in the international black market.
In a separate operation in Gossaipur area of Udharbond in Assam's Cachar district, Assam Rifles, acting on specific intelligence inputs, launched a joint operation with Cachar Police. During the operation, security forces apprehended two suspected drug smugglers and recovered 2,500 bottles of Codeine Phosphate syrup packed in 21 boxes, valued at around ₹7.25 lakh.
Officials said the coordinated operations dealt a significant blow to the narcotics supply network operating in the region. The Northeast, particularly border states such as Tripura and Assam, has increasingly been used as a transit route by drug traffickers for smuggling pharmaceutical narcotics.
The recovered contraband, along with the arrested individuals, has been handed over to the concerned law enforcement agencies for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Assam Rifles reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and dismantling organised smuggling networks through sustained intelligence-based operations in coordination with civil administration and law enforcement agencies.
Security officials said such operations will continue to curb the menace of narcotics and ensure the safety and security of the region.
