Aizawl/Champhai/Changlang, Aug 30: Assam Rifles, under the Spear Corps, conducted intelligence-led operations across Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh, targeting narcotics trafficking and cross-border smuggling networks.

In Champhai, Mizoram, Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Customs Department, seized 32,890 kg of areca nuts valued at approximately ₹3.44 crore. The operation targeted an illicit consignment suspected to have been routed through the border region.
In a separate joint operation at Aizawl, Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police apprehended three persons and recovered 878 grams of methamphetamine tablets, estimated to be worth around ₹2.63 crore.
The security forces also conducted an operation in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh, where two illegal Myanmar nationals were apprehended. The operation resulted in the recovery of 130 grams of heroin, valued at approximately ₹24 lakh.
The coordinated operations underline the importance of intelligence-sharing and joint enforcement efforts in tackling organised smuggling along the northeastern frontier. The region’s proximity to international borders makes it vulnerable to the movement of narcotics and other illicit consignments.
The recovery of substantial quantities of contraband in separate operations also highlights the continuing efforts of security and law-enforcement agencies to disrupt trafficking networks before illicit substances reach wider markets.
Assam Rifles has been maintaining sustained vigilance across vulnerable border areas, working alongside civil agencies and state police to identify and intercept suspicious movements and consignments.
The operations also reinforce the broader security objective of preventing transborder criminal networks from exploiting the region’s challenging terrain and extensive border connectivity.
Officials said the coordinated action demonstrates the security forces’ continued resolve to combat narcotics trafficking, illegal smuggling and unauthorised cross-border movement, while safeguarding communities across the Northeast.
Further investigation into the apprehended persons and recovered consignments is expected to establish the wider network and the intended destination of the seized material.
