Guwahati, July 3: In a series of intelligence-based joint operations across the Northeast, the Assam Rifles, under the Spear Corps, achieved major successes against narcotics trafficking and smuggling networks, recovering contraband worth over ₹15 crore and arresting nine alleged traffickers in coordinated operations with Cachar Police, the Customs Department and the Special Narcotics Police.
In the biggest seizure, Assam Rifles and Cachar Police conducted a joint operation at Tollengram in Assam's Cachar district, where two suspected traffickers were apprehended. During the operation, security forces recovered 30,000 Yaba tablets and 535 grams of Heroin No. 4, with the seized narcotics estimated to be worth approximately ₹9.5 crore in the illicit market.
In another intelligence-led operation at Khuangphah in Mizoram's Saitual district, Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Customs Department, intercepted a major smuggling attempt and seized 9,100 kilograms of illegal areca nuts valued at around ₹63.7 lakh. Four alleged smugglers were arrested during the operation.
In a separate operation at Sairang in Mizoram, Assam Rifles and the Special Narcotics Police apprehended three suspected traffickers and recovered 1.938 kilograms of methamphetamine tablets, estimated to be worth approximately ₹5.814 crore.
Officials said the coordinated operations dealt a significant blow to organised smuggling and narcotics trafficking networks operating in the region. The Northeast, sharing international borders with neighbouring countries, has long remained vulnerable to the movement of narcotics and other contraband, making intelligence-based operations crucial in disrupting such illegal activities.
The recovered narcotics, contraband and all apprehended individuals have been handed over to the concerned agencies for further investigation and legal action.
Assam Rifles said the successful operations underscore the effectiveness of seamless inter-agency coordination and reaffirm the security forces' commitment to dismantling smuggling syndicates and narco-trafficking networks across the Northeast through sustained intelligence-driven operations.
