Shillong, May 1: A dignified Samman Samaroh was held at Headquarters Directorate General Assam Rifles (DGAR), Laitkor, Shillong, where Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of the Assam Rifles, felicitated retiring personnel for their dedicated service to the nation.

The ceremony recognised a total of 147 personnel, including 01 officer, 62 Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), 81 Other Ranks, and 03 civil staff members, who superannuated on 01 May 2026 after years of selfless service.
The event was attended by 78 family members who had travelled from different parts of the country, adding a personal and emotional dimension to the farewell ceremony. Their presence highlighted the strong bond between the force and its extended families.
During the function, Lt Gen Lakhera conveyed appreciation for the professionalism, commitment and sacrifice of the retiring personnel, noting their contribution to maintaining operational effectiveness and internal security in challenging environments.
The ceremony also reflected the traditions and ethos of the Assam Rifles, often referred to as the “Sentinels of the North East,” which emphasises discipline, service and camaraderie.
The event concluded with an interaction over a Veterans’ Day lunch, where retired personnel shared memories from their service years. The gathering was marked by emotional moments, nostalgia and a strong sense of unity, reflecting the enduring esprit de corps within the force.
