Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of Assam Rifles, along with all ranks of the force, paid solemn tribute on Wednesday to a valiant soldier who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty on 24 July 1974. In a moving remembrance ceremony held across Assam Rifles formations, the force reaffirmed its deep respect and eternal gratitude to those who laid down their lives in defence of the nation.
Though more than five decades have passed, the memory of the martyr—whose identity has become symbolic of the selfless courage and discipline that defines the Assam Rifles—continues to inspire generations of soldiers. The soldier lost his life in a critical operation during a period marked by heightened tensions and internal security challenges, a time when the Assam Rifles was actively engaged in maintaining peace and sovereignty in India’s northeastern frontier.
“The supreme sacrifice of our braveheart on July 24, 1974, reminds us of the unwavering commitment and unshakable spirit of every soldier who serves the nation,” said Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera in his tribute. “We salute this brave soul and all those who have followed in his footsteps with honour and pride.”
Ceremonies were marked by wreath-laying at war memorials, special prayers by regimental priests, and motivational talks to the new recruits and young soldiers, focusing on the values of sacrifice, duty, and nation-first spirit.
Known as the ‘Sentinels of the Northeast,’ Assam Rifles has a rich legacy of service and sacrifice dating back to 1835. Over the years, the force has not only defended India’s borders but has also contributed immensely to counter-insurgency operations and humanitarian assistance missions. The tribute to the 1974 martyr reflects the force’s deep-rooted tradition of honouring its fallen comrades and passing their stories of valour down the ranks.
The Assam Rifles reaffirmed its pledge to uphold the ideals for which the soldier laid down his life. As part of its commitment, the force continues to support the families of martyrs through welfare initiatives and scholarships for their children.
The ceremony concluded with a resolute message: "Heroes never die—they live forever in the hearts of the nation.
