Assam Rifles seizes Opium and foreign currency

July 21, 2025 | BK News Service

In a significant blow to cross-border narcotics trafficking, the Assam Rifles recovered a large cache of contraband and cash during an anti-smuggling operation in Sajik Tampak area of Chandel district on July 16, 2025.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, troops of Assam Rifles established a Mobile Vehicle Check Post in the area. During the operation, two abandoned motorcycles were located near the check post. A thorough search of the vehicles led to the recovery of 50.5 kilograms of opium, estimated to be worth ₹2.52 crore in the international market.
In addition to the narcotics, the troops also recovered a substantial sum of foreign and Indian currency—1.24 crore Burmese Kyats and ₹2 lakh in Indian rupees—suggesting strong links to cross-border smuggling networks.
The seized items were promptly handed over to Chakpikarong Police Station for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Assam Rifles officials reaffirmed their resolve to combat the growing menace of narcotics trafficking and maintain vigilance in border areas of Manipur, which are often exploited by transnational criminal networks. The force continues to play a pivotal role in ensuring a drug-free and secure Northeast.
