Begging menace hits Bemina hospital

August 05, 2026 | Mohammad Danish

Srinagar, Aug 4: Patients and attendants at the Bemina Children’s Hospital are facing growing inconvenience due to unabated begging activity on and around the hospital premises, with many visitors expressing frustration over repeated appeals for intervention going unheard.

Attendants said groups of beggars, including children and elderly persons, frequently approach patients and their families inside the hospital area, creating discomfort for those already dealing with medical emergencies and emotional stress.
Many attendants alleged that despite repeated complaints, no effective measures have been taken to address the issue. They said the presence of beggars in a healthcare facility not only causes inconvenience but also raises concerns regarding hygiene, security and the overall environment of the hospital.
“People come here with sick children and are already under stress. They need a peaceful and clean environment, but constant requests for money add to their difficulties,” an attendant said.
Visitors urged the hospital administration and concerned authorities to take immediate steps to regulate entry into the premises, prevent unauthorized activities and ensure a patient-friendly atmosphere.
They also called for a coordinated approach involving social welfare authorities to address the issue of begging through rehabilitation measures rather than allowing vulnerable people to remain dependent on public spaces.
Patients and attendants said hospitals are meant to provide care, comfort and dignity, and stressed that the authorities must act promptly to restore order at the facility.
