Black Magic and Envy Grip Kashmir!

Allah Azzawajal says regarding those who practice magic: “They learn what harms them and does not benefit them… and they knew that whoever purchases it would have no share in the Hereafter.” (Quran 2:102)

Kashmir is known for its spiritual depth. The land of saints, but unfortunately, now faces a abandoning moral and social challenge. The alarming rise of envy (hasad) and the black magic (Sihr) made the life of people into hell. These evils are not merely cultural superstitions or harmless emotions; they are grave spiritual diseases that corrode faith, poison relationships, and invite collective decline. While society often treats envy lightly or justifies it as a natural reaction to others’ success, Islam categorically condemns it as a destructive sin with far-reaching consequences.
Envy is not merely to be unhappy with another person’s success but a spiritual disease that makes a person restless to take away the bounties and blessings bestowed by Allah to another person. When envy is instilled in the heart, it transforms into malice (bugz) and long-held grudges (keenah). These inner diseases then manifest outwardly through harmful speech, plotting, social sabotage, and, in extreme cases, recourse to black magic. Black magic does not emerge in isolation. It is born from hearts filled with jealousy, hatred, and resentment toward those who prosper, succeed, or gain honor.
Islam addresses this disease with absolute clarity. Allah Azawajal warns humanity of the dangers of envy in the Quran. In Surah al-Falaq, Allah commands believers to seek protection: “From the evil of the envier when he envies” (Quran 113:5). This single ayah is sufficient to establish how dangerous envy is. Allah azzawajal himself instructs us to seek refuge from its harm. If envy were a minor flaw, divine protection would not be required against it. Envy harms not only the one being envied but, first and foremost, the envier, whose heart burns in constant dissatisfaction with Allah’s decree. The Prophet Muhammad, PBUH, consistently warned us against envy, malice, and the hatred it breeds. In an authentic Hadith, he said: “Beware of envy, for envy englufs good deeds just as fire englufs wood”. This Hadith is a terrifying reality: a person may pray five times in a day, pray Tahajuud, fast, and perform good deeds, yet envy can silently destroy the spiritual reward of all those actions. Success, therefore, is not measured by outward achievements alone but by the purity of the heart.
In another well-known Ahadees, the Prophet PBUH said: “Do not envy one another, do not hate one another, do not hold grudges, and do not turn away from one another”. Live as devoted servants of Allah, bound together in true brotherhood. (Bukhari and Muslim). Here, envy, hatred, and grudges are mentioned together because they are interconnected diseases. When one enters the heart, the others soon follow. A society plagued by these traits cannot remain united, peaceful, or spiritually sound. The menacing link between envy and black magic lies precisely here. Black magic often stems from Poisoned envy and long-lasting grudges against relatives, neighbors, friends, or colleagues who succeed in life, marriage, wealth, education, or social standing. Instead of turning to Allah for their own upliftment, some individuals give in to the devil to exploit their resentment, leading them to forbidden practices. Islam unequivocally declares black magic (sihr) a grave sin and an act of disbelief when it involves reliance on forces other than Allah Azzawajal.
Allah Azzawajal says regarding those who practice magic: “They learn what harms them and does not benefit them… and they knew that whoever purchases it would have no share in the Hereafter.” (Quran 2:102) This ayat leaves no ambiguity: black magic brings harm, but no benefit, in this world or the next. When envy pushes a person toward such acts, it seals their moral and spiritual ruin unless sincere repentance is made.
The Prophet PBUH also strongly condemned black magic, malice, and grudges. While the exact wording “not among my Ummah” appears in several narrations regarding destructive behaviors, the clear meaning remains that such traits contradict the spirit of true faith. A believer cannot claim nearness to Allah Azzawajal and the Prophet PBUH while harboring hatred, envy, and ill intentions blamworthy eyes toward others. Success, both worldly and spiritual, is a dream as long as these poisons dominate the heart.
Kashmir, like any society, cannot thrive when envy replaces gratitude and malice replaces brotherhood. Brushing aside these grave sins has normalized moral decay, fractured relationships, and weakened trust within families and communities. Islam offers a clear antidote to such spiritual diseases, purifying the heart through contentment with Allah’s decree, making dua for those who succeed, seeking refuge in Allah from envy, and replacing jealousy with gratitude and sincere goodwill. True success does not lie in sabotaging others but in elevating oneself through faith, patience, and moral integrity and good ethics. Until envy is cast aside and hearts are purified of grudges and malice, no society, no matter how blessed and sacred its land, can achieve lasting peace or divine success.
