Breaking the Chains of Addiction

February 26, 2025 | Dr. Ibrar Bashir

Drug addiction is a complex issue that involves individuals, families, and society. Drug addiction has a profound impact on mental and physical health, family, and society.

The Social Implications of Drug Addiction
Health Consequences

The physical and mental health suffers adversely due to drug addiction, resulting in chronic diseases such as liver disease, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and psychiatric disorders like depression, anxiety, and psychosis. The health system is burdened with the long-term treatment and care of addiction disease.

Disintegration of Families

Families, in the majority of instances, are the direct victims of drug addiction, economically and emotionally. Family members of the drug addict are most likely to experience guilt, shame, and helplessness. The addict may be responsible for domestic violence, neglect, and disintegration of family relationships.

Societal Impact

Addiction to drugs has led to rising crime rates, economic cost, and cycles of poverty and joblessness. Rising drug addiction has also led to the transmission of infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis because of sharing needles and unhygienic practices.

Preventing Drug Addiction

Parents too can be involved in preventing drug addiction. Some of the ways parents can contribute are as follows:

Open Communication

Establish a culture of open communication and trust with children. Talking to children about drug abuse risks and consequences of the same can lead them to make the right decisions.

Setting a Positive Example

Live well and don't abuse. Children learn from parents, and therefore living well is necessary.

Direction and Supervision

Monitor the behavior of children and direct them. Suspicion of drug abuse, like a change in behavior, academic performance, or social group, cannot be excluded.

Increasing Supportive Climate

Increase children's interest in pursuits and emotional guidance. Supportive home climate decreases substantially the risk of addiction to drugs.

Fighting Drug Addiction
The Society's Role

Civil society is collectively responsible for handling the problem of drug addiction. Collective efforts can generate a scenario that supports prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Awareness Campaigns

Initiate awareness campaigns to enhance the consciousness of the masses towards the epidemic of drug addiction. Drug education modules should be incorporated in schools and colleges so that youths gain skills and knowledge to overcome peer pressure.

Access to Treatment and Rehabilitation

Provide affordable and accessible treatment for the addicts. Counseling, rehabilitation facilities, and support groups are required in helping individuals overcome and reintegrate into society.

Stigma Eradication

Eradicate stigma by encouraging compassion and acceptance. Addicts must be treated as human beings who need assistance and not as criminals or rejects.

Toughening Law Enforcement

Introduce stringent controls to remove illegal drug availability. The governments should regulate drug stores and remove the causes of drug addiction, i.e., poverty and unemployment.

Involving Community

Provide youngsters with a sense of safety and belongingness. Community sport centers, youth clubs, and mentorship schemes can offer substitutes to drug abuse and promote good relations.
Addiction to drugs is a multidimensional problem that must be dealt with by the combined efforts of all. The society and the parents need to join hands and stop drug abuse before it becomes too late, heal the ones already victimized, and lead them towards a drug-free and healthy future. We can limit this epidemic with sincere dialogue, emotional guidance, and awareness-raising.
