Breaking the silence: Confronting domestic violence in J&K

June 17, 2025 | Aaliya Zahoor

Domestic violence, a term often whispered behind closed doors has been growing at an alarming rate in Jammu and Kashmir. Beneath the breathtaking beauty of snow-capped mountains and serene valleys, many homes echo with silent cries, unheard by the world outside. This hidden crisis continues to affect countless women, children, and sometimes even men, tearing apart the very fabric of family life and personal freedom. In recent years, the number of reported cases has seen a disturbing rise. Lockdowns, economic hardships, mental stress, and prolonged conflicts have only added fuel to the fire. For many victims, home is not a place of peace, but a battlefield where dignity is shattered, and fear becomes a daily companion. Cultural norms, fear of social stigma, and lack of financial independence often force victims to suffer in silence. While laws exist to protect individuals, the real struggle lies in the implementation, support systems, and most importantly, changing the mindset of society.

It is time we, as a community, break the silence and bring light to this darkness. Raising awareness, strengthening support networks, and empowering victims with legal, emotional, and financial aid must become our collective priority. Schools, mosques, NGOs, and media should join hands to create a culture where violence is not tolerated, no matter how private it seems. Let us remind ourselves: silence only protects the abuser. If we truly wish to see peace in Jammu and Kashmir, it must begin at home, with love, respect, and safety as its foundation.
