Budshah bridge incident: Calls grow for safety fencing across Srinagar bridges

April 28, 2026 | BK News Service

Srinagar, April 27: A recent incident at Budshah Bridge in Srinagar has renewed concerns over a rise in cases of people jumping into the Jhelum river, with concerned citizens calling for urgent installation of safety fencing on bridges across the Srinagar city.

Recently, a youth jumped from the bridge into the river during late evening hours. An auto driver present at the spot attempted to stop him but was unsuccessful.
The incident has added to a series of similar cases reported in recent times, involving both young and elderly individuals, prompting growing concern among locals.
Respectable citizens said the absence of protective barriers or fencing on several bridges has made such incidents easier, and urged authorities to take preventive measures.
“Fencing is necessary. These bridges remain open and vulnerable. Timely intervention can save lives,” a local said.
People have appealed to the government to treat the issue as a matter of urgency and install proper railings or fencing on major bridges, particularly those with high pedestrian movement.
Locals said such steps could act as a deterrent and help prevent impulsive acts, especially during late evening hours when monitoring is limited.
The repeated incidents have triggered concern in the city, with locals stressing the need for immediate action to prevent further loss of life.
