Central teams probe Nowgam Police Station blast

November 17, 2025 | Ayaan Wani

In a major development following the tragic accidental blast at Nowgam police station, Jammu and Kashmir, teams from the National Security Guard (NSG), National Investigation Agency (NIA), and Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) visited the site on Sunday to conduct a detailed investigation. The explosion, which occurred late Friday night, claimed the lives of nine personnel and injured 32 others, leaving the local community and police department in shock.

Officials said the central teams were tasked with collecting and analyzing samples from the blast site to determine the nature and composition of the explosives involved. Preliminary reports indicate that the materials were linked to a recently unearthed 'white collar terror' module. The central agencies are working closely with J&K police to ensure a thorough forensic examination, which could help prevent similar incidents in the future.
The accidental blast occurred during the process of handling and sampling explosives that had been recovered from arrested suspects of the terror module. According to senior police officials, standard safety protocols were reportedly in place, but the highly sensitive nature of the materials may have contributed to the mishap. Investigators are reviewing the entire sequence of events leading up to the incident to determine exact causes and identify potential lapses.
Authorities have emphasized that there is no evidence of any external sabotage or terrorist involvement in the explosion. The investigation is, however, expected to provide a detailed report on the handling procedures of such explosives in police custody, aiming to strengthen safety measures across the region.
The J&K administration has extended condolences to the families of the deceased and assured full medical care and support to those injured in the blast. Senior officials, including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, have expressed grief over the tragic loss and highlighted the bravery and professionalism of the police personnel involved in counter-terrorism operations.
Local residents and community leaders have also visited the affected families to express solidarity, while security agencies continue to remain on high alert to prevent any further untoward incidents. The CFSL and NIA teams are expected to take several days to complete the forensic analysis, after which findings will be shared with the state administration and police authorities to strengthen future preventive measures.
This incident has brought to the forefront the risks involved in handling explosives recovered from terror operations and has prompted calls for stricter protocols and training for police and security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir.
