After announcing a judicial inquiry into the September 24 violence in Leh in which four persons were killed and 80 others injured, the stalled talks between Ladakh leaders and the central Government is set to resume as the Centre has invited representatives of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) for subcommittee-level discussions in New Delhi on October 22.
LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjay said both the civil society groups leading the demand for statehood to Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule have been called for the meeting by the Ministry of Home Affairs
“ Eight members have been called for the meeting and we have decided that three each members of LAB and KDA, the Member of Parliament from Ladakh and a lawyer will attend the deliberations in Delhi," he said.
The High-Powered Committee (HPC) on Ladakh will be meeting later.
The talks between Ladakh leaders and the Centre were stalled following the September 24 violence in Leh.
Violence broke out in Leh district on September 24, when police allegedly opened fire on protesters demanding Sixth Schedule status and statehood for Ladakh, leaving four people dead and over 100 injured.
Authorities subsequently imposed curfew-like restrictions, suspended mobile Internet services, and arrested more than 70 people, including climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was booked under the National Security Act (NSA).
The administration has since restored Internet services, relaxed restrictions, and claimed that normalcy has returned. The LBA and KDA remained adamant that talks would not be held till a judicial probe was ordered.
Two days ago, the central Government also ordered a judicial probe into the incident.
After the probe was ordered, the Ladakh bodies agreed to resume talks.
