Srinagar, Aug 2: A cloudburst struck the upper reaches of Khonmoh on the outskirts of Srinagar on Saturday, triggering panic among residents and raising concerns over possible damage to property, agricultural land and infrastructure.

According to local residents, the cloudburst occurred in the hilly areas above Khonmoh, sending a sudden surge of water, mud and debris rushing downhill. The incident caused fear among people living in the area, though there were no immediate reports of loss of life.
Residents said water flowed through several low-lying areas, while mud and debris accumulated along roads and open spaces, disrupting normal movement. They expressed concern that continued rainfall could increase the risk of flash floods and landslides in the area.
Soon after the incident, officials from the local administration and other concerned departments rushed to the affected area to assess the situation. Teams remained on alert to respond to any emergency and monitor vulnerable locations.
Authorities have urged residents living near streams and hilly slopes to remain vigilant and avoid venturing into vulnerable areas during periods of heavy rainfall.
Locals appealed to the administration to undertake immediate assessment of the affected area, clear blocked drains and water channels, and implement long-term flood mitigation measures to minimise the impact of such incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, the administration has advised people to follow official weather advisories and cooperate with emergency agencies in the event of any further adverse weather conditions.
