Counselling Key to Easing Board Exam Stress

October 12, 2025 | Andleeb Jan

Board examinations are often considered a turning point in a student's academic journey. However, beyond marks and merit lies a pressure so intense it silently affects the mental and emotional well-being of students. Expectations from teachers, parents, and their own selves build an invisible burden. In such a vulnerable phase, what students need most is not just preparation, but proper guidance, emotional support and structured counselling to deal with this overwhelming experience.

As we know, board exams tend to place students under immense pressure. From the very beginning, they become the main focus of everyone. Teachers set high expectations, parents look at them with pride and hope, and even society starts treating them like contenders in a race. Most of all, they start expecting too much from themselves. At first, they feel confident, determined to shine and make their parents proud as it is their final chance to prove themselves. But as time passes, that confidence often turns into self-doubt. Thoughts like “What if I fail? What if I forget everything in the exam hall?” start haunting their mind.
These negative thoughts don't just stay in their imagination, they slowly start affecting their reality. One difficult question can shake their confidence. Even the answer they know suddenly feels blurry and they forget small details. Stress clouds memory and their mind goes blank.
To ensure students don't crumble under the pressure of board exams, we must take active steps toward effective counselling. Schools can organise awareness programs that focus on mental well-being and exam strategies. Teachers must adopt a friendly and approachable attitude so that students feel safe sharing their fears. Every student should have access to a mentor, someone they trust, who can guide them on what to study, how to manage time, and how to stay emotionally strong. Most importantly, we must listen to students, understand what they fear the most and help them work through their struggles.
Because in moments of pressure, what students need the most is caring counselling and compassionate guidance.
