Know Your Artisan’ campaign
The Handicrafts and Handloom Department is set to ignite a celebration of the region's timeless artistry with the launch of 'Know Your Artisan' campaign.
This immersive series, a key pillar of brand 'Soulful Kashmir' promotion, invites the general public to connect directly with the maestros behind Kashmir's world-renowned crafts.
A spokesperson of the Department stated that the events under Know Your Artisan are scheduled for October 11, and 30 at iconic Srinagar venues of Jhelum Riverfront, Clock Tower, Lal Chowk and Heritage Bridge Rajbagh, respectively.
“In a rare opportunity to bridge tradition and community, national award-winning artisans and weavers will step out from their workplaces to share personal stories, unveil the intricate techniques of their crafts and engage in conversations with visitors and tourists,” he said.
The campaign will also highlight the 15 GI-registered crafts that define Kashmiri excellence, including the hypnotic patterns of carpet weaving, the luxurious warmth of Pashmina and Kani weaving, the delicate artistry of Papier mache, the sculptural beauty of walnut wood carving, and the splendour of Khatamband ceiling.
“Visitors will also learn about the vital role of QR coding in verifying authenticity, ensuring that every piece carries the true stamp of Kashmiri heritage,” the spokesman said.
Adding to the vibrancy, the events will also showcase Srinagar's prestigious status as a designated World Craft City and part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network, a dual distinction that underscores the city's unparalleled contributions to global craftsmanship.
The Department shall also organise special student interaction sessions with legendary craftsmen, inspiring the next generation to preserve and innovate within these traditional arts.
“The visitors can witness live demonstrations, from the loom's Pashmina weaving to the pinpoint precision of walnut carving, offering an up-close view of how these famed Kashmir handicrafts come to life,” the spokesman said.
'Know Your Artisan' series is free and open to all, promising a day of cultural immersion, storytelling, and discovery.
