The Health Centre and Directorate of Students Welfare (DSW) at Central University of Kashmir (CUK) in collaboration with the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Government Chest Disease Hospital, organized a one-day Pulmonology Camp under the theme “Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life” to mark World Lung Day as part of Sewa Parv 2025.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. A. Ravinder Nath emphasized the critical link between student health and academic success, highlighting the importance of physical and mental well-being in line with the National Education Policy 2020. He praised the collaboration between the university and healthcare professionals for promoting awareness on respiratory health.
Prof. (Dr.) Naveed Nazir Shah, Head of Pulmonary Medicine, raised alarm over rising tobacco use in J&K, citing it as a major cause of lung diseases, hypertension, cardiac issues, and systemic disorders. He advised preventive measures, particularly during harsh winters, and stressed the role of community leaders, teachers, and parents in combating tobacco consumption.
The camp included interactive sessions where pulmonology experts addressed student and faculty queries on lung health, lifestyle changes, early diagnosis, and preventive care. Dr. Arshad Sofi (MD, Anesthesia and Pulmonology) also participated in consultations.
Dean DSW, Prof. Irfan Aalam, noted that the program sensitized participants about tobacco risks, environmental hazards, and unhealthy diets. Medical Officers Dr. Abid Ahmad and Dr. Sheeba highlighted early detection and lifestyle changes as essential for preventing respiratory illnesses. The event concluded with a sapling plantation by Prof. Ravinder Nath and Prof. Shah, symbolizing a commitment to health and sustainability.
