Highlights role of technology in nation-building
The Department of Civil Engineering, in collaboration with the Department of Information Technology at the Central University of Kashmir (CUK), commemorated Engineers’ Day 2025 at the Tulmulla campus today, celebrating the legacy of Sir M. Visvesvaraya and recognizing the transformative role of engineers in modern society.
Vice Chancellor Prof. A. Ravinder Nath, in his address, emphasized the critical role of engineers in national development. He distinguished between engineering and technology while highlighting their synergy in shaping innovation. “Engineers are not just builders of infrastructure but architects of sustainable societies. Our education must go beyond theory, focusing on real-world problem-solving,” he said.
Guest of Honour, Er. Iftikhar Kakroo, Chairman of JKWRRA, discussed the far-reaching impact of engineering innovations—from everyday tools like matchsticks to life-saving technologies like pacemakers and major infrastructure like dams. He underlined the increasing importance of engineers in the face of climate change and population pressures, urging students to focus on infrastructure and sustainability.
Keynote Speaker Prof. Chiranjeev Kumar, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Dhanbad, spoke on "Emerging Technologies in Digital Business." He stressed the role of AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Cloud Computing, and IoT in shaping future business and societal landscapes. He also noted the growing convergence of engineering disciplines in the digital era.
Prof. Farooq Ahmad Mir, Dean of the School of Legal Studies, encouraged students to emulate Sir Visvesvaraya’s dedication and values. He highlighted how modern engineers are at the forefront of breakthroughs in green energy, AI, smart cities, biotech, and space exploration, addressing humanity’s most pressing needs.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Yash Paul, Coordinator of the IT Department, shared insights on the life and contributions of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, calling him a visionary who helped shape modern India.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Er. Asif Shah and Er. Afaq Alam, Coordinators from the Civil Engineering Department, who expressed gratitude to all speakers, dignitaries, and participants.
The day-long celebration included an inaugural session, technical presentations, and an alumni interaction session, all marked by active student and faculty participation, reflecting CUK’s commitment to holistic engineering education.
