The Health Centre and Department of Students Welfare (DSW) at Central University of Kashmir (CUK), in collaboration with the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK), observed World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 by organizing a programme on the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” at the Tulmulla campus.
The event featured expert talks and presentations aimed at spreading awareness, breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, and encouraging collective action to prevent suicides.
Addressing the gathering, Registrar Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir highlighted the sociological dimensions of suicide, drawing on Emile Durkheim’s classic typology. “Suicide is not merely a psychiatric issue but deeply linked to social and cultural factors,” he said, urging students to face challenges with courage and never lose hope.
Dean, School of Legal Studies, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Mir, emphasized cultivating a positive mindset. Citing examples of inspirational figures like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, he encouraged students to view setbacks as opportunities. “Believe in hard work and have faith in destiny,” he noted.
Dr. Majid Shafi, Consultant Psychiatrist at JLNM Hospital, provided a sobering overview of Kashmir’s mental health crisis, revealing that nearly 45% of adults experience psychological distress, with youth (16–25 years) being most affected. “Suicide rates in Kashmir rose dramatically post-1990, reaching 13 per 100,000 by 2020,” he said, urging people to recognize early warning signs and seek timely intervention.
From District Hospital Ganderbal, Dr. Farah Shafi, Medical Superintendent, revealed that out of 300–350 patients weekly, 20–25% express death wishes and 10–15% show suicidal ideation. Stressing that “suicide is preventable,” she called for empathetic engagement and community-driven support systems. She also flagged substance abuse, especially heroin and cannabis, as a significant risk factor.
Dr. Nazir Ahmad, Asst Prof. of Religious Studies, urged students to stay grounded in the present. “A healthy thought process focused on the now can transform life’s meaning,” he said.
Earlier, Dr. Reehana Shawl, Asst Prof. Department of Law, outlined the programme’s objective—raising awareness and encouraging proactive mental health support. Dr. Mudasir Ahmad conducted the proceedings and stressed that “suicide is preventable when society takes timely, compassionate action.”
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sheeba Nazir, Medical Officer, while staff including medical attendant Mr. Javid Ali and other Health Centre members were present.
