
Department of Mathematics, School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir), organized a one-day workshop on “Unlocking the Power of Meaningful Learning: Making Maths More Enjoyable” at Tulmulla here Tuesday.
In his welcome address, Dr. H. R. Bhapkar, HoD, Deptt of Mathematics, stressed the importance of building meaningful connections in mathematical learning to stimulate curiosity and sustain interest. He pointed out that the objective of the workshop was to provide practical insights into meaningful learning, which enables learners to acquire, retain, and apply knowledge effectively. He further emphasized that mathematics should be studied through mathematical ways rather than mechanical ways. He added that learning mathematics sharpens logical reasoning, enhances brain activity, and develops creativity. Dr. Bhapkar expressed his thanks to Vice Chancellor, Prof. A. Ravinder Nath, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Shahid Rasool and Dean Physical and Chemical Sciences, Prof. M Yousuf for their support and guidance.
In his inaugural address, chief guest, Prof. M. A. Sofi, Professor Emeritus, University of Kashmir highlighted the importance of conceptual clarity and creative pedagogy in mathematics education, setting an inspiring tone for the day’s sessions. Prof. Sofi elaborated on fostering deep understanding in mathematics through experiential learning. He stressed that “Mathematics is all about Understanding” and illustrated his points with practical examples.
The second session, delivered by Prof. D. C. Sharma from the Central University of Rajasthan, presented effective strategies for making mathematics learning enjoyable at different academic levels. He emphasized the significance of linking mathematics to everyday life and highlighted the teacher’s role in motivating students.
The third session was delivered by Prof. Vinayak Joshi from the Department of Mathematics, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Pune who focused on innovative learning methodologies in mathematics and their impact on student motivation and academic performance.
The event brought together eminent mathematicians, academicians, and students to deliberate on innovative approaches for making mathematics more engaging, accessible, and enjoyable.
Dr. Shabir Ahanger proposed a vote of thanks for the inaugural session and Dr. G. M. Sofi proposed the vote of thanks during the programme culmination. Tabasum Rahim and Asra Farooq students from 9th Semester moderated the event.
