January 13, 2026 | BK News Service

Ganderbal, Jan 12: Central University of Kashmir (CUK) on Monday celebrated the National Youth Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, one of the country's greatest spiritual leaders and youth icons.

The programme was organised by the Dean, Students’ Welfare (DSW) in collaboration with the Department of Education, in blended mode (offline and online) at Tulmulla Campus.
In his keynote address, Prof. Syed Zahoor Geelani, Dean, School of Education, presented an overview of the life and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda. He highlighted Swami Vivekananda’s contributions to Indian thought, particularly in the fields of Vedanta and Yoga, and emphasised his teachings on Karma Yoga as a guiding principle for selfless action.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir, Registrar, stressed the importance of universal brotherhood as envisioned by Swami Vivekananda. He reflected upon Swami Vivekananda’s teachings in the context of India’s multicultural and pluralistic society, underscoring the values of tolerance, patience, harmony, and brotherhood that today’s youth must imbibe to strengthen national unity and social cohesion.
In his address, Prof. Shahid Rasool, Dean, Academic Affairs, shared motivating words with the participants, emphasising the power and potential of youth in transforming society. He observed that the betterment of society largely depends on the effective utilisation of youth power and urged students to actively engage in social service and character building, which form the very essence of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings. For ViksitBharat@2047 the ideas of Swami Vivekananda, involving the youth energy, serve as a guiding principle.
Earlier in his welcome address Dr. Jehirul Islam, Associate Professor, Department of Law, underscored the enduring relevance of Swami Vivekananda’s philosophy in contemporary times, highlighting how his teachings continue to inspire the youth to confront present-day challenges with courage, ethical strength, and a sense of social responsibility.
The programme was followed by an Open Mic Session, during which Prof. Shahid Rasool, Dr. Firdous Ahmad Sofal, and Dr. Mudasir Ahmad Bhat shared their thoughts. The session was moderated by Dr. Adil Amin Nazki, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Rehana Shawl.
