Department of Communication and Journalism (DCJ), Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) organized a special theatrical performance titled “Regret of Shakespeare”, performed by the department’s research scholar and theatre artist, Mr. Nizar Ilthumish.
The play was staged at the amphitheater, Tulmulla Campus and graced by the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. A Ravinder Nath, along with the Dean Academic Affairs (DAA), Prof. Shahid Rasool, Registrar Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir, and other dignitaries.
The drama was an experimental theatrical presentation based on five prominent characters from Shakespeare’s works. It creatively depicted a courtroom-like setting, where Shakespeare’s characters emerged as prosecutors, witnesses, and jury, collectively reflecting on themes of tragedy and moral conflict, while symbolically presenting Shakespeare’s defense. The performance, rooted in the spirit of experimental theatre, received appreciation from the audience.
Vice Chancellor, Prof A. Ravinder Nath, appreciated the performance by Mr. Nizar Ilthumish and hoped that more such performances would become a regular feature in the university’s cultural and academic life. He emphasized the need to expand the scope of the department “towards becoming a School of Arts and Media Studies in the future”, particularly if such creative initiatives continue to grow among young talents.
DAA, Prof. Shahid Rasool, congratulated the performer and appreciated the way in which all five characters of Shakespeare were enacted by the artist. He shared his vision on the expansion of the department to include more departments within the School of Media Studies to cater to other fields like theatre and fine arts.
Earlier, Dr. Arif Nazir, HoD, DCJ, introduced the theme of the play and talked about the importance of such events in the University Campuses. He introduced to the audience the sequence of the solo drama performed by Mr. Nizar. Faculty members, Dr. Asif Khan, Dr. John Babu, and Dr. Nookaraju were present.
