Jammu, Jan 28: The doctors misbehaved with MLA West Udhampur Pawan Gupta at the Government Medical College Udhampur during the meeting convened by the MLA following death of a local due to alleged medical negligence in the hospital.
According to reports, the incident occurred after the death of a patient at Government Medical College Udhampur, following which the MLA summoned doctors to question them over their alleged absence from the emergency ward at the time of the incident.
Gupta during the review meeting held yesterday reminded the medical staff of their professional responsibilities and demanded accountability.
The discussion escalated into a verbal clash as several doctors objected to the allegations.
During the heated exchange, one of the doctors attempted to snatch the microphone from the MLA’s hand, the video of it has gone viral on social media.
The police officials present at the spot intervened.
The MLA has said had police officials not been present at the spot, the doctors would have assaulted him.
He had demanded stern action against the doctors and warned of registering an FIR against six doctors for misbehaving with him. “If they don’t apologise, I will file an FIR against them”.
The video of the whole episode went viral on social media. It has caused uproar with people demanding action against the doctors for medical negligence.
Meanwhile, the government ordered a detailed inquiry into the circumstances and events that led to the circulation of videos on social media platforms in connection with Government Medical College (GMC), Udhampur, on January 27, 2026.
As per Government Order No. 67-JK (HME) of 2026, sanction has been accorded to the appointment of Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Gupta, Principal, Government Medical College, Jammu, as the Inquiry Officer to probe the matter.
According to the order, the inquiry will examine the sequence of events and look into the administrative, security and institutional aspects related to the incident(s) at GMC Udhampur that resulted in the circulation of the videos on social media.
The Inquiry Officer has been directed to submit a reasoned and comprehensive report within 15 days from the date of issuance of the order.
