Does My Mental Health Matter ?

The interests and desires of a child should be legal and legitimate. So if the dreams of their children are legitimate, then they should support them to follow their dreams

January 23, 2023 | Shakirah Amin Bhat

Comparison is a burning question in today's modern visualized technological competitive world. Moreover it is a common word for today's students as well, who is being compared with all his high scoring cousins and friends. It is today's student who is enduring this disaster slowly and steadily. Every elder member of the family compares their younger ones with others.Their comparison is mainly like ;When this cousin can score such marks, why can't you? When he can crack this exam, why can't you?Despite of studying in such a school, why are you still an average student? And many more questions like this they ask while comparing us with others. In this way I as a student am being compared with that every person who is either of my age or has done something wonderful. And if I put forward my interests, that are somehow simple then my parents think i insolent them.I agree with the point that every parent wants to see his child on the higher of the highest position but the parents should think that my this desire may be isn't the desire of my child and its his life , he should be the one to decide what he wants to do in life. Here i don't mean that parents should give their children the liberty to ruin their life or do whatever they want to . No, they should just look at the interests of their child. If their child wants to become an artist, journalist or a writer let him be and value his interests, but a child should also have such desires which are acceptable not like that a child will wish to be a gangster and when his parents won't allow him he'll say they aren't valuing my interests. The interests and desires of a child should be legal and legitimate. So if the dreams of their children are legitimate, then they should support them to follow their dreams.
Every child is born with different interests.Every child is born with different likes and dislikes, different habits and a different mindset. And this different mindset directs a child about what to do and what not to do.This mindset is like a guide for a person, it guides him whether he wants a simple life or he wants a luxirious one. This is what makes him think that his dream job is better than any other job for him.You can change a person's external appearance but you can never change his mindset or his perspective. But even here people think that only those students are intellectuals who have cracked or are in preparation of cracking national level exams like NEET,JEE or UPSC. Indeed those students are intelligent who crack such exams but apart from that the students who are interested in other professions can also be intelligent because i don't think that there can be any profession or any job that one can get without qualifying an exam and due to the rate of unemployment govt. hasn't left any stone unturned in making the exams more complex due to the less number of seats and more corruption. It proves that there isn't a single profession which is easy to qualify for an educated student.Even the most of the people have an ideology according to which the professions of the world are just confined upto MBBS and engineering;but that's completely wrong world is full of professions among which an individual can go with one and be a master of it.
Another stereotype is that of streams. That once a student is done with his class 10th and he is directed to choose his streams , If he chooses medical or non-medical stream he's considered the one who can achieve something in life;no matter even if he doesn't know the M of medical and has chosen it just because of his family pressure he's an intellectual, but if he chooses Arts or Commerce stream he's known to be good for nothing even if he's a topper or a bright student. But why don't they think optimistically? Why don't they think that they are the students of the same stream who motivates students to become IAS officers who they see on the social media and which they consider a motivation. Why don't they think that the CA's they see handling economy of various companies have came from the same commerce stream which they considered inferior for their child?
I agree that our parents and teachers have high expectations from us and they want us to be at higher positions and i am in favour of these expectations as they have every right to have expectations from us because they are the ones who have supported us to reach where we are today. And we should work extremely hard to fulfill these expectations BUT not at the cost of our mental health. I know they expect from us because it is us who made them expect ; they expect from us because they don't want anyone else to bad about us ;they expect from us because they don't want us to suffer from the problem which made them suffder;they expect from us because they don't want our position to become low while others hold good positions ....BUT there expectations shouldn't effect our mental health. But there expectations should not make us feel inferior ;there expectations should not make me feel insecure.I know that when our parents compare with others they want us to be at a higher position than the people with whom we are being compared. But no one thinks what a drastic effect it has on our mind . We keep on overthinking that if i am working so hard why am i still compared with others? It is rightly said that wealth is lost nothing is lost, when health is lost something is lost so it clarifies that when your mental or physical health is effected u lose something...That something is your peace of mind and trust me that it matters.
When I normal human being wakes up early in the morning what does he think? He thinks Oh ! what a pleasant morning...or he might think about the plan for his day ;but i as a student when i wake up the first thought that strikes my mind is today is my test again, have i prepared enough to score good marks ? Instead of thanking Allah for blessing me with one more day all i think is about my marks, my performance in the class and all that stuff related to my academics. Now even if my parents won't say anything about my marks but these marks have been given such an importance in my life that if even my 0.5 marks are deducted i feel like a part of my body has been removed from me . Such importance has society given these marks.Apart from this, dozens of assignments and anxiety about future all is just retarding my mental health.
At conclusion,I would like to request parents to stop pressurizing your children because of your "so called realtives" and make a friendly environment with them,so that it will be you who will solve their insecurities rather than their online friends
