Drug Addict finds new life at Baramulla centre

April 20, 2026 | Shugufta Rashid /Nisar Malik

Baramulla, April 19: In a powerful story of recovery and resilience, a former drug addict from Baramulla has shared his journey from addiction to renewal, crediting the Drug De-addiction Centre for helping him reclaim his life.

The individual, whose identity is being withheld, said his descent into substance abuse began during his teenage years, influenced by peer pressure and curiosity. What started as occasional use soon turned into dependency, affecting his health, relationships, and future prospects. “I lost control of my life. I distanced myself from my family, dropped out of studies, and felt trapped with no way out,” he recalled.
His turning point came when his family intervened and brought him to the Drug De-addiction Centre in Baramulla. Initially reluctant, he gradually began engaging in counselling sessions and rehabilitation programmes offered at the facility.
The centre provided a structured recovery plan, including detoxification support, psychological counselling, and behavioural therapy. Counsellors worked closely with him to address underlying emotional issues, rebuild self-esteem, and develop coping mechanisms to prevent relapse.
“Recovery was not easy. There were moments when I wanted to give up, but the constant support from counsellors and my family kept me going,” he said. Over time, he regained confidence, restored relationships, and began focusing on rebuilding his future.
Today, he is leading a drug-free life and hopes to inspire others facing similar struggles. “If I can come out of it, anyone can. The first step is to ask for help,” he added.
Counsellors at the centre emphasized that addiction is a treatable condition, not a moral failure. They highlighted the importance of early intervention, family support, and sustained rehabilitation in ensuring long-term recovery.
The Baramulla Drug De-addiction Centre continues to play a crucial role in addressing substance abuse in the region by offering free treatment, counselling, and awareness programmes. Officials said such success stories serve as motivation for others to seek help and break free from addiction.
The story stands as a reminder that even in the darkest phases, hope and recovery are possible with the right support and determination.
