In recent years, Kashmir has been grappling with numerous challenges, but two of the most pressing issues are human trafficking and drug addiction. While human trafficking threatens the safety and dignity of individuals, drug addiction is wreaking havoc on the lives of countless young boys and girls.
Kashmir, often described as "Jannat-e-Benazir" or the "unparalleled paradise," has long been recognized for its natural beauty, cultural richness, and unspoiled environment. Known as Pervar in the Kashmiri language, this land was once a symbol of purity, where the air was clean, the rivers pristine, and the people known for their simplicity and ethical values. However, this purity and harmony have been disrupted over time by human actions and neglect, leading to a troubling decline in the region’s social and moral fabric.
In recent years, Kashmir has been grappling with numerous challenges, but two of the most pressing issues are human trafficking and drug addiction. While human trafficking threatens the safety and dignity of individuals, drug addiction is wreaking havoc on the lives of countless young boys and girls. These issues are not only devastating families but also eroding the future of the region.
Drug addiction, in particular, has become a rampant problem, infiltrating educational institutions and communities. Universities, colleges, and even schools have become breeding grounds for this menace, with young people being lured into substance abuse due to peer pressure, lack of awareness, or emotional distress. The accessibility of drugs, coupled with the absence of effective preventive measures, has worsened the situation.
This problem cannot be seen in isolation. It is deeply connected to the broader issues facing the region, such as unemployment, lack of recreational facilities, and psychological stress caused by ongoing conflicts. These factors make young people vulnerable to seeking escape through drugs. The alarming rise in addiction rates among the youth is not just a personal tragedy for families but also a collective failure of society to address the root causes of the problem.
The consequences of drug addiction are far-reaching. On an individual level, it leads to health complications, loss of productivity, and in many cases, death. On a societal level, it fuels crime, breaks families apart, and burdens the healthcare system. Most importantly, it robs Kashmir of its most valuable resource – its youth.
Kashmir is facing a serious problem of drug addiction, with even young children falling into this trap. The spread of drugs is happening for several reasons.
First, lack of jobs is a big reason. With few job opportunities, many young people feel hopeless and start using drugs to escape their problems. The fear of an uncertain future pushes them toward self-harm.
Second, stress and mental health issues make things worse. Many people, struggling with tension, sadness, and anxiety, use drugs to feel temporary relief. Sadly, this only makes their situation worse.
Third, drugs are easy to get, which makes the problem even bigger. Drug smugglers and illegal sellers make sure that drugs are available, even to teenagers. Weak laws and poor enforcement allow this illegal trade to grow.
If this danger is not stopped soon, the future of Kashmir will be in great trouble. Families will suffer, society will become weaker, and many young people may lose their future to drugs.
Addressing this issue requires a multi-pronged approach. Awareness campaigns, strict law enforcement to curb drug trafficking, accessible rehabilitation centers, and counseling services are critical steps in combating this menace. Parents, educators, religious leaders, and community members must work together to create a supportive environment where young people can thrive without falling into the trap of addiction.
On one side, the police and top officials of Jammu and Kashmir are working hard to find and stop those involved in such activities. Their efforts are truly admirable and deserve appreciation. However, at the same time, this illegal trade is spreading even more. Many senior officers have set rules against smoking and are charging a fine of Rs. 200 for breaking them. This is a good step because smoking is harmful to health, and controlling it is beneficial.
But I want to ask the Government of Jammu and Kashmir a question. If smoking is being restricted, then why are liquor shops still open and easily available in places like Srinagar and other districts? Drinking alcohol also has serious risks, and keeping these shops open raises questions about fair rule-making. What is the reason behind this difference in policy?
In conclusion, Kashmir’s transformation from a pure and untainted paradise to a region struggling with social evils like drug addiction is a stark reminder of the consequences of neglect and inaction. However, it is not too late to reclaim its lost glory. With collective effort, determination, and a focus on the welfare of the younger generation, Kashmir can once again become the paradise it was
