The first reason is the lack of knowledge. Neither in educational institutions nor in our homes is emotional maturity discussed. If it is, it happens to a very limited extent. Due to a shortage of experienced individuals in educational institutions
Human beings are a bundle of emotions. A single human contains various emotions. Happiness, sorrow, hatred, envy, affection, etc., are found in every person. Depending on the circumstances, corresponding emotions arise. Sometimes, a person sinks deep into thought and goes through phases of mixed emotions. Being emotional is natural. It is not a flaw. God forbid, it is not an illness. Just as feeling hungry is a sign of being healthy, similarly, being emotional is also a sign of well-being. However, the problem arises when a person gets swept away in the flow of emotions. Their ability to distinguish between good and bad is lost. Or they lose the power to make decisions.
Here, delicate matters like emotions are not discussed openly. They are mentioned only occasionally, or most people are unfamiliar with this realm. The number of people who are experts in this field is also very small. In our traditional society, the most essential things often receive the least attention. The things that should be of the highest priority are pushed to the background. As a result, crucial issues like emotions remain overlooked. It is the outcome of the collective actions of the entire society that situations reach such an extreme. If we call ourselves emotionally illiterate, there is no harm in that. There are numerous reasons behind this situation. Reasons ranging from private to collective, both play a role in this immaturity. It is not necessary for the readers to agree with the reasons mentioned in this article. These are my experiences, and the reader is free to disagree with me.
The first reason is the lack of knowledge. Neither in educational institutions nor in our homes is emotional maturity discussed. If it is, it happens to a very limited extent. Due to a shortage of experienced individuals in educational institutions, this subject is never talked about. Yes, some verbal lessons are taught, and students memorize them like parrots and move on. Those poor students are unable to understand how much impact emotions have on our lives. To put it another way, as mentioned earlier, life is but a play of emotions. A loss feels like doomsday, otherwise, there's no limit to joy. The second is detachment from real life. We all think that life is about earning, eating, and sleeping. Apart from this, performing some rituals is what life is. This is utterly wrong. No one can do the work a machine does. However, without emotions. Similarly, fish in the sea eat more than a human can imagine. But devoid of emotions. Likewise, some animals sleep all day. They don't do much work either. But they too are devoid of emotions. But a human is a different entity. They have feelings. They don't just need food and sleep. However, there is something inside that needs something else. A person lives from within, not from without. External circumstances are not in our control. But if the internal system is correct, external storms cannot cause ruin. To reach this state, the most essential thing is to use emotions positively and provide them with reasonable opportunities to express themselves from within. If emotions had been counted among the basics, today we would not have widespread mental stress and sin everywhere. We gave priority to things of secondary importance over the primary ones, which is why earning, eating, and sleeping have now become seemingly pointless. If we had worked on emotions, then even less food, less sleep, and less earning would have been a source of satisfaction. We let emotions loose like an unbridled horse in a field, and when they became uncontrollable, we flailed our arms and legs everywhere, but the result was zero. Our condition is like that of such a horse. The third is religious narrow-mindedness. Here, religion has been confined to a few rituals. The fundamental purpose of religion is to make life easier and simpler. An unbridled life has no foundation. Religion brings awareness into life. Being conscious at all times is a fundamental characteristic of religion. A moment of negligence is against religion. It desires that a person refines both their inner and outer self. That the ocean of emotions does not take the form of a flood. That one does not, carried away by the current of emotions, utter words of disbelief. That one does not become disconnected from God. That one does not despair of God's mercy. That the essence of God remains ever-present before one's eyes. This is the concept of true religion. Islam also emphasizes using emotions in reasonable ways. In states of sorrow, happiness, envy, affection, hatred, etc., it teaches not to let go of the reins of intellect but to stand firm against the destructive flood of emotions. Contrary to this, in our society, Islam has become focused on a few specific acts of worship. People fight in the name of sectarianism. But if everyone worked together, significant changes would occur both within us and around us. The fourth is our own shortcomings. We sit idly by, waiting for some divine intervention. This is utterly wrong. We could have done much in this matter, but we showed laziness, and emotions moulded the emotions in our homes while we remained in a deep slumber.
To use emotions positively, everyone must contribute their share. For this, the government's full support is needed. Emphasis should be placed on Emotional Quotient instead of Intelligence Quotient. From homes to educational institutions, the focus should be on EQ. The need for experienced individuals and teachers has increased. It is essential to provide emotional training to children and youth. The circumstances are such that the effective benefits of emotions should be reaped. The time demands it, and we should be ready to give it time. How long will people keep suppressing emotions until they themselves are crushed? Waking up to this matter before it's too late is a mercy in itself.
