Living in the age of highly developed technology we feel proud of the advances made in the fields of agriculture, medicine, biotechnology, energy and industry. However, these advances have created problems of pollution, global warming, depletion of natural resources, extinction of wildlife , development of new diseases. No doubt these problems have developed due to our greed, indifference, ignorance, shortsightedness and arrogance.Technology is not responsible for these problems,it is the misuse of scientific inventions and discoveries by man who needs to be blamed. While we continue to progress and move towards the age of artificial intelligence and quantum computing,it is quite clear that the kind of future we create depends upon our choice and discretion.Under such a situation we must understand the ecological laws of nature and try to preserve our environment for our own existence and to sustain all other life forms. We must use our natural resources wisely and not disturb its fair balance. We must be cautious that if we don't protect our environment in present times, environment will not protect us in future times. We should follow sustainable development to strive towards sustainable world.Only by following sustainable development path we can keep our environment sustainable.
Sustainability means the ability to last and resist depletion.Ensuring a sustainable environment requires continuous human efforts. In earlier days man used to live a harmonious life with nature by using the bare minimum natural resources to meet his everyday needs. It is clearly the time for a new philosophy of sustainable development i.e., the utilisation of natural resources judiciously for a more stable development, without impairing the abilities of future generations to use these resources and thereby interference into their living rights. The term sustainable development was brought into
common use by the World Commission of Environment and Development in its 1987 report (Brundtland Commission) 'Our Common Future' and defined it as 'meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the needs of the future generation'.At the Earth Summit, held at Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, twenty seven principles were enunciated in the Rio declaration for sustainable development leading to a sustainable world. The Rio declaration aims at achieving a healthy rate of economic growth without damaging or depleting the supply of natural resources. The transition to a sustainable society will challenge the capacity of countries everywhere to change and adapt. Some adjustments will occur in response to market forces, some to public policy changes and still others as a result of voluntary changes in lifestyles.Sustainable development does not ignores technology development ,it teaches suitable use of scientific inventions and discoveries. It has been observed that technological well developed nations can fight environmental problems easily.Sustainable development involves cooperation not competition between nations. In sustainable development it is the duty of rich nations to help poor nations in their fight against climate change by providing aid both technical and financial.Agreeements like Kyoto protocol and Paris agreement are examples which show willingness of nations to work together in order to resist climate change and keep environment safe.At global level efforts have been made to create global alliance to fight global warming. One of the great physicist Stephen Hawking once said" There should be war on global warming not on global terrorism". Powerful nations have more responsibility than poor nations as financially weak nations have rare resources to fight climate change.International organizations like UN have responsibility to bind nations in fighting climate change with special focus on emission cuts and control. The corporate class must be motivated to ensure balance between development and environment. We must always keep in mind that the best legacy which we can give to our coming generations is clean environment not smartphones or laptops. Finally I will quote Fred Bosworth who once said"If we go on as we are, we will destroy in the next century everything that poets have been singing about for the past
