EPG opposes commercial Expo at SP College ground

March 23, 2025 | BK News Service

The Environmental Policy Group (EPG) has expressed deep concern over the proposed use of SP College Ground for a private commercial exhibition.
EPG has learned through public advertisements that Minds-Media Management Pvt. Ltd. has been granted permission to organise "WAC - World of Architecture and Construction Expo" at the historic college ground from May 3-5, 2025.
EPG strongly objects to this blatant misappropriation of educational and recreational space for commercial purposes. SP College Ground is designated primarily as an educational asset and sports facility where 1000s of youth come to play, it is meant for students' physical development and well-being, not a venue for profit-driven commercial exhibitions.
EPG highlighted that the college ground serves as a vital recreational space for students and the local community. Allowing commercial events directly contradicts its intended purpose and deprives students of access to essential physical activity spaces.
EPG warns that such commercial usage will inevitably cause damage to the turf and infrastructure, requiring rehabilitation at the cost of taxpayers' money while the private entity walks away with profits. Furthermore, the precedent being set could transform educational institutions' facilities into commercial venues, undermining their primary function.
Environmental concerns were also raised regarding the exhibition, which would involve heavy footfall, vehicular movement, temporary structures, and waste generation on grounds that are meant to provide green space within Srinagar's increasingly congested urban landscape.
It is incomprehensible how a private commercial entity was granted permission to use this academic facility when numerous other appropriate venues exist for such purposes in Srinagar.
This decision reflects either a troubling lack of judgment or, more concerning, a disregard for the sanctity of educational spaces.
The Environmental Policy Group has demanded immediate revocation of any permission granted for using SP College Ground for this or any commercial exhibition; a transparent inquiry into how this permission was granted; clear guidelines prohibiting the use of educational institution grounds for commercial activities; and accountability for those responsible for this inappropriate decision.
