Eroding Values

December 09, 2025 |

Kashmir, a land known for its scenic beauty, rich culture, and deep-rooted traditions, is now grappling with a crisis far more insidious than political unrest or natural calamities. Recent incidents, such as the shocking discovery of a newborn baby abandoned in the SKIMS baths, are grim reminders that the moral fabric of society is under severe strain. Coupled with a rising crime rate, diminishing respect for the elderly, and a visible erosion of cultural values, these developments paint a worrying picture of contemporary Kashmir. The very foundation of a peaceful and progressive society rests on shared values — compassion, respect for life, and responsibility towards community and family. When newborns are abandoned, or when elders are disregarded and left vulnerable, it signals not only an immediate moral failure but also a long-term societal decay. These are not isolated events; they are symptoms of a broader cultural crisis. The young generation, influenced by materialism, neglect, and a loss of traditional guidance, seems increasingly detached from the ethical compass that has guided Kashmir for centuries. Crime statistics mirror this decline in values. Daily reports of thefts, assaults, and other criminal activities indicate a growing disregard for law, justice, and human dignity. While enforcement agencies are working tirelessly, the solution cannot be purely punitive. There needs to be a concerted effort to rebuild the social conscience — starting from homes, schools, colleges, and religious and community institutions. Education must go beyond academics to instill empathy, respect, and social responsibility. Equally alarming is the gradual erosion of Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage. Festivals, art forms, and local traditions that once united communities are increasingly sidelined. Culture is the soul of a society; when it fades, so does the sense of belonging and moral accountability. Reviving cultural practices, promoting intergenerational dialogue, and honoring the elderly can serve as powerful tools in restoring community cohesion and ethical grounding. Kashmir stands at a crossroads. It is imperative for policymakers, educators, religious leaders, and families to recognize that law enforcement alone cannot safeguard society. The revival of values — respect for life, elders, and culture — is essential for reducing crimes and nurturing a compassionate, responsible, and resilient community. If this moral awakening does not occur soon, the consequences will be far more devastating than any temporary spike in criminal activity. Kashmir’s natural beauty is eternal, but its moral and cultural beauty must be preserved with equal dedication. The time to act is now.
