Ex-MLA & BJP leader Faqir Khan shoots self dead

Former MLA Gurez and BJP leader Faqeer Mohammad Khan on Thursday allegedly shot himself dead at government quarters at Tulsi Bagh area on Thursday.
Khan shot himself dead from the weapon of his Personal Security Officer (PSO).
Police said initial findings suggest the incident appears to be a case of suicide.
"An incident of firearm discharge was reported today in the Tulsibagh area of Srinagar, resulting in the death of a former legislator, a resident of Gurez. Police has taken cognizance of the matter, and legal proceedings under Section 194 of the BNSS have been initiated at Shergarhi Police Station," a police spokesman said.
"Initial findings suggest the incident appears to be a case of suicide. Further investigation is ongoing, considering all aspects," the spokesman said.
Khan had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly polls last years on BJP ticket from Gurez seat. He lost to National Conference’s Nazir Ahmed Gurezi.
Khan was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir assembly in 1996 as an Independent candidate. He joined BJP in 2020.
BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur said the former MLA died by suicide and it was not immediately known as to why he took the extreme step.
Expressing grief over his demise, Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha said Faqeer Mohammad Khan's contribution to the development of Gurez is immense and he touched and improved thousands of lives.
"On this extremely sad occasion, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and followers. I pray for his soul," he added.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, "Deeply saddened by the passing of former legislator Faqeer Mohammad Khan. He was a true grassroots leader. My heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace."
J&K Assembly also observed two minutes of silence and paid tributes to him.
J&K BJP extended heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of its former MLA.
