Farmers advised to cultivate water-efficient crops

February 19, 2025 | BK News Service

Amidst drought-like weather conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, authorities on Tuesday advised farmers to cultivate crops which require less water.
Joint Director (Extension) Department of Agriculture, Sartaj Ahmad Shah expressed concern over drying of major water bodies particularly in south Kashmir.
He advised farmers to stay away from rice cultivation and opt for alternate crops.
“We advise farmers to grow crops that require less water. Instead of paddy, they should consider millets, corn, and pulses,” Shah said.
He said the department is working on contingency plans in collaboration with Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) to deal with the situation.
“We are in contingency plans with SKUAST as it will guide us regarding the suitable places for the growth of crops and other varieties,” Shah said.
With the dry spell continuing, farmers have been urged to stay updated on advisories and adopt sustainable agricultural practices to mitigate the impact of water shortages.
