The fire incidents have been on the rise in Srinagar city in recent years.
Last week a fire broke out at the Government Circuit House of the Hospitality and Protocol Department. In March this year, a fire broke out in a house in Indra Nagar area of central Kashmir's Srinagar district following which fire tenders reached the spot and doused off the flames in the house located near Masjid Rehmat.
Experts said that there are a number of factors that have contributed to this, including increasing use of flammable materials. “ Srinagar city is a major trading hub, and there is a lot of trade in flammable materials such as plastics and chemicals. This has increased the risk of fires. The infrastructure in Srinagar city is old and dilapidated, and this makes it more vulnerable to fires. Many of the buildings are made of wood and other flammable materials, and they often lack fire safety features such as smoke detectors and fire extinguishers,” experts said.
The fire incidents in Srinagar city have caused a lot of damage and loss of life. In 2022, there were over 100 fire incidents in the city, which caused damage worth millions of rupees. The fires have also claimed the lives of several people.
The government and the fire department have taken some steps to address the problem of fire incidents in Srinagar city which includes enforcing fire safety regulations.
The government has enforced fire safety regulations for buildings and businesses. This includes requiring buildings to have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, and to have fire escape plans in place, providing fire safety training. The government and the fire department have raised awareness about fire safety through public campaigns and advertisements.
These steps have helped to reduce the number of fire incidents in Srinagar city.
Experts emphasised that people should be aware of the fire hazards and know where the electrical outlets are and make sure they are not overloaded. They added the people should keep heaters away from flammable materials.
